What’s The Right Milk for Your Baby?

Your baby's tummy is small and delicate. In the first 1,000 days- from conception to 2 years of age, the digestive system is learning how to break down food, absorb nutrients, and build defenses against infection. What you feed during this window matters more than at any other time in life.

Mother's milk is designed precisely for this stage. It delivers nutrients in the right form and quantity for a delicate digestive system that is not yet ready for heavier, harder-to-digest feeds. When the gut is healthy, it absorbs what the body needs. A well-nourished tummy today sets the stage for good digestion, better immunity, and healthier growth for years to come.

What you feed in the first year matters a lot.

Mother's Milk: Made Just For Your Baby

Mother's milk is liquid gold for your baby. It is made just for them- with the right nutrients, in the right amounts, at the right time. It even changes as your baby grows to give them exactly what they need. No other milk can do this.

Breast Milk Has Everything Your Baby Needs:

Breast milk is gentle on baby's small stomach because it contains the following nutrients in the right amount.

Good bacteria for the gut– It has probiotics and prebiotics that keep baby's tummy healthy and fight infections. Probiotics are good bacteria and prebiotics are food for probiotics.

Right protein– Breast milk has 1-1.2 grams of protein per 100 ml- perfect for baby. It has more whey (70-80%) and less casein (20-30%). Whey forms soft curds, which are easy to digest and gentle on tummy.

Important nutrients– Iron and other nutrients come in a form baby's body absorbs easily. Vitamins, minerals, help build baby’s strength to fight diseases thereby protecting them from illness.

Why Animal Milk Is Hard To Digest

Animal milk is meant for calves, not human babies. Your baby's small tummy cannot digest it easily, and it does not have the right balance of nutrients for their growth.

A calf doubles its weight in just 47 days while our baby takes about 180 days. Their dietary needs are very different.

Too much tough protein– Animal milk has 3.3 grams of protein per 100 ml- almost three times more than human milk. It has more casein (80%) than whey- types of milk protein, which forms hard thick curds in baby's stomach, which are difficult to digest.

Low in key nutrients– Animal milk is low in iron, Vitamin C, and Vitamin D. Babies drinking animal milk as their main milk are at higher risk of anaemia and vitamin D deficiency.

Blocks Iron absorption- High calcium stop baby's body from absorbing iron, increasing anaemia risk. Furthermore, high protein, Potassium, Sodium, Chloride content of animal milk puts load on baby’s developing kidneys.

What Should You Do?

Breast milk is best– Give only breast milk for the first 6 months. Post 6 months, introduce solid foods along while continuing breastmilk until 2 years.

Animal milk is perfect for a calf- but your baby needs feed made for humans to support the still developing digestive system because a healthy tummy is the foundation of good health.

When confused about what to feed your baby, ask your doctor or health worker.
